My journey started when I got my first scrap of Huon Pine and fell in love with the beauty, smell and feel of the wood. After that it grew into a major part of my life, and is now a regular part of my day and an important tool for my wellbeing. I hand carve each of the animals I sell. No two are exactly the same. Starting with a small piece of scrap wood that I have sourced from local craftspeople, I find the animal that best fits the feature and shape of the wood. That animal is often a wombat. I use an ever growing selection of knives and gouges to rough out the shape. I then sand the animal, going up to 400 grit or higher, to give the animal a smooth texture that is soft and pleasing to hold. All the carvings have been given a food safe coating that allows for the natural aroma of the wood to still shine through.
Now after several years the wood carving has permeated most of my life. I attend various makers markets in the Hobart area and share my enthusiasm with anyone who risks asking me about my creations. No area of my life is safe from this hobby, including my counselling work. I offer carving as an activity in sessions to my clients to help them do something creative while they talk. I also educate groups on techniques, safety, and its benefits as a mindfulness activity. I am never without a blank piece of Huon Pine and a pencil in my pocket to plan out a design whenever I have a spare moment. On this website I offer a range of my creations. Additionally I am happy to do custom work, and I am open to working with small groups and running workshops. If any of these offerings are of interest, please get in touch on the contact page.
